90, WWII veteran, machinist
Chester B. Overly, 90, of Lititz, formerly of New Holland, died Friday, April 26, 2013 at Landis Homes after a brief illness surrounded by his family.
Born in East Earl Township, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Laura (Horst) Overly. His wife, Hilda B. (Parmer) Overly, died April 13, 2006. They were married April 13, 1946 and were married for 60 years.
Chester retired in 1984 after 41 years of service as a machinist at the former New Holland Machine Company.
He attended Faith Evangelical Congregational Church in Lancaster and he was a member of the Jordan Run Hunting Club. During WWII he served in the 5th Army in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He enjoyed watching his sons and grandchildren play sports, reading, hunting, and fishing.
Surviving is a daughter: Elaine, married to Lamar Witmer of New Holland; three sons, Larry, married to Lori (Kreider) Overly of Ephrata, Carl, married to Lorraine (Reesor) Overly of Louisville, KY, and Dean, married to Beth (Eitnier) Overly of Austin; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Jane Riker and Margaret, married to Theron Kreider; six brothers, John, married to Dorothy Overly, Harvey, married to Barbara Overly, Alfred, married to Ruth Overly, Hiram, married to Faye Overly, Edwin Overly, and Kenneth, married to Judy Overly; and a brother-in-law, Reynold Ovensen.
Preceding him in death are two sisters, Mildred Bassler and Betty Ovensen.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 1 at 11 am at Landis Homes West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, PA 17543. Interment will be in the Zeltenreich’s Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Tuesday from 6-8 pm at the BECK FUNERAL HOME, 315 E. Main St., New Holland and on Wednesday at Landis Homes West Bethany Chapel from 10-11 am.
